Tom Nolan extended his winning streak to six with a third-round knockout of Renato Moicano in the UFC Vegas 123 main event on Saturday, but the finish was immediately overshadowed by what many in the sport called the most controversial officiating call of the year.

With Moicano controlling the fight from back position late in Round 2, referee Dan Miragliotta intervened and ordered a standup reset — a decision that drew instant backlash given that Moicano was actively working from a dominant position rather than stalling. Moments after the fighters were brought to their feet, Nolan landed a damaging knee that shifted the fight’s momentum decisively in his favour. He went on to finish a visibly exhausted Moicano with ground strikes in the third.

Whether Nolan would have found a way back into the contest without the reset remains an open question, but the MMA community left little doubt about where it stood on Miragliotta’s call. UFC lightweight Terrance McKinney was among the most direct in his assessment.

“He capitalized, but the ref won that one,” McKinney wrote on social media. “Crazy work standing that up.”

The sentiment was widely shared across the sport, with fighters and analysts alike describing the standup as indefensible given the circumstances. Moicano, a longtime contender at lightweight, had appeared on course for a clear victory before the intervention changed the complexion of the bout entirely.

For Nolan, the win represents the most significant result of his career and a statement performance at the top of a UFC card. The manner of the finish, however, ensures that Miragliotta’s decision — rather than the knockout itself — will define how UFC Vegas 123’s main event is remembered.
