Several members of Iran’s coaching staff and representatives of the Iranian football federation have been denied entry to the United States four days before the 2026 World Cup begins. The denials reportedly concern security officials, logistics personnel, and some federation executives, according to RMC sources.

Iran’s participation in the tournament had already been uncertain for weeks due to difficulties obtaining visas from the Trump administration. While the players and technical staff ultimately received clearance, the situation remains precarious for Team Melli, which must launch its campaign against New Zealand in the night of June 15-16.

According to the same sources, American authorities are reportedly considering restricting the Iranian delegation’s presence on U.S. soil to match days only. Under this scenario, the team would be based in Tijuana, Mexico, just kilometers from the border, and would make the journey to the United States on the day of each match. This would be an unprecedented arrangement in the tournament’s recent history, potentially disrupting the preparation of a squad already weakened by weeks of administrative uncertainty.

FIFA, American authorities, and Iranian representatives are currently in discussions to find an acceptable solution. The 2026 World Cup officially opens on June 11 with the match between South Africa and Mexico, with the United States and Canada entering the competition on June 12 and 13 respectively.
