A Las Vegas high-roller walked away with a $1,138,395 payout after placing a $777,000 bet on Argentina to beat Austria at the 2026 World Cup, with Lionel Messi delivering the goods in a nervy 2-0 victory.

The wager, reported by Station Sports, was placed at Red Rock Resorts roughly 19 hours before kick-off, backing Argentina at -215. The bet looked anything but safe when Messi missed a penalty just nine minutes in — a moment that could have turned the match on its head. The Argentine captain steadied himself with a 38th-minute goal, but the bettor was still sweating deep into second-half injury time with the scoreline at 1-0.

Messi then put the result beyond doubt with a second goal to seal the win, handing the bettor a net profit of $361,395. Argentina, the defending World Cup champions, had arrived at the match in fine form after a 3-0 rout of Algeria in which Messi scored all three goals.

The scale of that single sportsbook wager stood out in part because so much World Cup betting activity has migrated to prediction markets, where trades operate more like financial instruments than traditional sports bets. When a large ticket does land at a conventional sportsbook, it commands attention.

Elsewhere, a $50 parlay at Hard Rock Bet produced one of the more remarkable tickets of the tournament’s group stage. A customer combined the exact correct scores of three matches: Argentina to win 3-0 at +800, France to win 3-1 at +1000, and Norway to win 4-1 at +1400. The combined parlay odds came to +148400 — or 1484/1.

All three legs landed. Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria was the most straightforward, courtesy of Messi’s hat trick, completed in the 76th minute. France required a Kylian Mbappé goal six minutes into second-half injury time to complete a 3-1 victory over Senegal. Norway’s 4-1 win over Iraq was sealed by an own goal in the 96th minute. The $50 stake returned $74,250.

The tournament has already produced 13 draws in 40 matches through the group stage, a reminder that even heavy favourites carry real risk — as the Argentina bettor discovered firsthand before Messi bailed him out.
