Vardy ends club search by signing one-year deal with bottom-of-the-table Burnley

Jamie Vardy has signed for Burnley on a one-year contract, ending a prolonged spell without a club that had linked the 39-year-old with moves to Everton, Sheffield Wednesday, West Ham, Wrexham, and even São Paulo in Brazil.

The former Leicester City striker had been a free agent since leaving Italian side Cremonese at the end of last season. He arrives at Turf Moor with Burnley in desperate need of a spark — Nicky Hayen’s side are bottom of the Championship after five games, collecting just two draws and three defeats.

“I’m really happy to now be here at Burnley FC,” Vardy said. “This club has a proper footballing history and passionate fans who deserve a team that represents them and their town. I can’t wait to get going on the pitch and help the team move in the right direction.”

Hayen welcomed the signing with optimism. “His experience and leadership will be invaluable to our squad, and we believe he can make a significant impact on our campaign. Jamie has a proven track record, and we are looking forward to seeing him in a Claret shirt.”

Vardy remains one of the most decorated players in Leicester’s history. He was the driving force behind their extraordinary 2015-16 Premier League title triumph — widely regarded as the greatest upset in the competition’s history — and also won the FA Cup and two Championship titles with the Foxes. He earned 26 England caps, scoring seven international goals.

Burnley’s immediate priority is climbing off the foot of the second tier, and Vardy’s predatory instincts in front of goal — honed across more than a decade at the top level — represent a calculated gamble that experience can arrest their early-season slide.
