Valentin Barco set for Chelsea move after confirming Strasbourg departure
Chelsea are closing in on a fifth summer signing as Argentina left-back Valentin Barco, who has been named in Lionel Scaloni's World Cup 2026 squad, publicly confirmed his exit from sister club Strasbourg and appears headed to Stamford Bridge.
Valentin Barco has confirmed his departure from Strasbourg and is expected to complete a move to Chelsea imminently, becoming the club’s fifth summer signing ahead of Xabi Alonso’s arrival as head coach.
The 21-year-old Argentina international posted a farewell message on social media after ending his spell at the BlueCo-owned French club. “Today I say goodbye to this club,” Barco wrote. “I always gave everything on the pitch in every game for this shirt. I want to thank my team-mates, who made everything easier for me. Liam Rosenior and his staff for the confidence they showed in me and for helping shape me as a player; Gary O’Neil and his staff for understanding me and helping me improve; everyone at the club who supports us every day; and the fans for the love they always gave me. Thank you, Strasbourg.”
Barco initially joined Strasbourg on loan from Brighton in January 2025 before the French club signed him permanently for £8 million. Reports from as early as April indicated Chelsea had already reached a personal agreement with the player ahead of a summer switch, and given the shared ownership structure between the two clubs, significant complications appear unlikely.
The left-back has been named in Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina squad for the 2026 World Cup, underlining the progress he has made during his time in Ligue 1. Notably, his development at Strasbourg extended beyond his natural position, with former manager Liam Rosenior identifying qualities that could allow Barco to operate as a midfield option — a versatility that may prove useful to Alonso.
Barco would be the fifth addition to Chelsea’s squad this summer, following a recruitment drive consistent with the club’s strategy of targeting young talent under Todd Boehly’s ownership. Corinthians left-back Denner was confirmed in January 2025 and joins on July 1 upon turning 18, while Kazakh teenager Dastan Satpaev, Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda, and Strasbourg forward Emmanuel Emegha have also been secured.
The arrival of another left-sided player is likely to ease any concerns around competition for places in that area of the squad, with Marc Cucurella among those whose role could be affected by the depth Barco adds.
