USA's 2-0 win over Australia breaks sportsbook records as World Cup fever grips America
The United States' opening 2-0 victory over Australia at the 2026 World Cup generated the highest number of wagers ever recorded on a single soccer game at Caesars Sports, with 87% of the handle backing the Americans — and sportsbooks paid the price.
The United States beat Australia 2-0 in their 2026 World Cup group-stage opener, and the result did not just secure a place in the Round of 32 — it also delivered a significant blow to sportsbooks across the country, who reported record-breaking betting volume almost entirely skewed toward the American side.
Caesars Sports head of soccer trading Mark Bickerdike confirmed the match generated the highest number of wagers the company has ever seen on a single soccer game. “The betting activity on USA vs. Australia suggests that World Cup fever is well and truly building in the U.S.,” Bickerdike said. “The U.S. Men’s National Team was extremely popular, accounting for 87% of the handle in the match betting market. So plenty of customers will be celebrating tonight.”
Team USA’s two goals came in the first half. The opener arrived via a deflection for an own goal, before Alex Freeman added a second with a leaping header at the goal line, also off a deflection. The two-goal cushion was never threatened, locking up moneyline bets and Asian handicap wagers at both -1 and -1.5 goals.
Casey Degnon, risk manager at The SuperBook, summed up the bookmakers’ afternoon bluntly. “It was good for the customers. Good for America. Bad for the book.”
Bickerdike noted one narrow escape for Caesars: Folarin Balogun did not score, sparing the book further pain in the player props markets. “He was undoubtedly the most popular selection across our player prop markets,” Bickerdike said. BetMGM trading manager Tristan Davis — who is Australian — was even more concise when asked how the result landed for his shop: “Next question.”
Despite the losses, oddsmakers are not entirely unhappy with the direction of the tournament. A deep American run would sustain the elevated betting interest that made Friday’s match so extraordinary in the first place. “Keeping America alive in the tourney will continue to drive action. So it’s not all bad,” Degnon said.
With the win, the USA are now a -1000 favourite to top Group D at Caesars. The picture will sharpen further once the Türkiye vs. Paraguay result is settled — a Türkiye victory would set up a first-place decider against the United States. Caesars has already shortened USA’s outright tournament odds from +4000 to +2800 in response to the win and the surge of public backing.
