USA clinch World Cup knockout spot in two games with 2-0 win over Australia
The United States made history at the 2026 World Cup on Friday, beating Australia 2-0 in Seattle to secure a round-of-32 place after just two group-stage games — a first for the programme. Captain Tim Ream called it the most special group he has been part of.
The United States reached the World Cup knockout round faster than any previous American side, defeating Australia 2-0 at Seattle Stadium on Friday to clinch a round-of-32 berth with a game to spare in Group Stage play. It was also the team’s first clean sheet in nine matches, ending a run that stretched back to September.
The victory followed a 4-1 demolition of Paraguay in the opening fixture, giving Mauricio Pochettino’s side a perfect record through two games. The coach celebrated by leading the crowd in a chant after the final whistle, while Christian Pulisic took a lap of the field with teammates as fans sang “Take Me Home, Country Roads”.
Captain Tim Ream, visibly emotional on the pitch after the final whistle, said the togetherness inside the squad was driving the momentum. “We’re just having a good time,” he told reporters. “We’re enjoying every moment together. Every goal, every block, every set play, just everything we’re doing is together. And that’s how we create the momentum.”
Rea, who has been part of the national team setup for many years, went further in describing what makes this group feel distinct from those that came before. “I’ve told these guys that this is the most fun, most special group that I’ve been around — and I’ve been around a long time,” he said. “There’s something about this one that just feels different. The personalities, the way everybody meshes, the way everybody fits together is just really enjoyable as the old man in the group to be a part of.”
Rea is not known for public displays of emotion, but cameras caught him visibly moved during the post-match team huddle on the field. He admitted he could not fully account for the reaction. “As everybody knows, I’m pretty good at keeping composure and I have no idea what that was, to be completely honest,” he said. “Maybe it was just everything. Now we’ve obviously clinched a spot in the round of 32 and that wave hits you.”
Tougher tests remain in the group stage and beyond, but the performances so far have turned each fixture into appointment viewing for a home nation carrying the weight of expectation as co-hosts of the tournament.
