Guilherme Uriel secured a UFC contract at Dana White’s Contender Series Season 10, Week 3 on Aug. 25, submitting heavyweight Mario Piazzon with a standing guillotine in just 50 seconds — redemption for a knockout loss that had denied him the same prize a year earlier.

Uriel (8-2) had fallen to Josh Hokit via knockout in his first DWCS opportunity and came away convinced he had made a critical tactical error: abandoning the jiu-jitsu that underpins his game. Facing Piazzon, a product of the grappling-heavy Galpao Da Luta gym, Uriel and his team anticipated a wrestling-heavy approach and spent their camp sharpening takedown defence and fence work — setting up the finish that arrived inside the first minute.

“One of the things from last time, it was my sin not to use my jiu-jitsu,” Uriel said in his post-fight interview. “And with all due respect to Galpao Da Luta, that’s a great gym. We know they’re tough people, but we trained all that, all the time. We knew that jiu-jitsu was going to happen, and we, all the takedown defenses, just make sure that everything was against the fence. And when that neck was there, I said, ‘I’m taking that home. I’m not going to let that go.’”

The finish was entirely in keeping with Uriel’s record: all eight of his career victories have come by stoppage in the first round. The submission of Piazzon was the latest and most consequential, delivering the UFC deal that eluded him twelve months ago.
