Upamecano insists Olise will stay at Bayern, but Neymar-Piqué precedent tempers optimism

Dayot Upamecano assured that Michael Olise will remain at Bayern Munich next season, brushing aside with a smile the rumours of a transfer to Real Madrid. Questioned in German by Sky Sport, the French central defender answered without hesitation: “He stays, he stays.”

The France international winger is one of the most valued players on the market right now. Transfermarkt values him at 150 million euros, and Real Madrid is said to have shown persistent interest for several weeks.

Upamecano is well-placed to speak about Olise: the two men work together at Bayern as well as in the France team. But his statement, however spontaneous, cannot constitute a contractual guarantee — and football history offers an eloquent precedent to doubt it.

In the summer of 2017, Gerard Piqué posted a photo alongside Neymar, accompanied by the now-famous “se queda” — “he stays” in Spanish — to put an end to speculation about a departure from Barcelona. A few days later, Paris Saint-Germain paid the 222 million euros of the Brazilian’s release clause, signing the most expensive transfer in football history.

The parallel is enough to temper the optimism of Bayern supporters. If Upamecano’s good faith is beyond doubt, transfer matters at this level are rarely settled in the dressing room — and even less in front of a camera.
