Carragher and Sturridge rule Chelsea out of title race after 2-1 loss to Arsenal

Chelsea’s early-season title credentials took a significant hit on Sunday as goals from Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard gave Arsenal a 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium, prompting pundits Jamie Carragher and Daniel Sturridge to emphatically rule Xabi Alonso’s side out of the Premier League title race.

Morgan Rogers had given Chelsea a dream start, opening the scoring inside 90 seconds, but Arsenal quickly reasserted control. Havertz levelled before half-time — with an Arsenal equaliser having already been ruled out — and Odegaard sealed the win with a composed finish from a brilliant team move in the second half.

The result was a sobering reality check for a Chelsea side that had arrived at the Emirates on the back of back-to-back wins over Fulham (3-2) and Brighton (4-3), and had been tipped by some as potential challengers to the reigning champions this season.

Sturridge was measured but clear in his assessment, pointing to a lack of cohesion beyond Chelsea’s front three as the core problem. “They threatened Arsenal at various moments, but I think they are very much leaning into the front three right now,” he said. “The chemistry is there for the front three, but outside of it, you can see it’s a work in progress. You can still see there’s a little bit of confusion — it’s not seamless yet. That’s not sustainable all season.”

Carragher went further, framing the gap not just as a question of Chelsea’s development but of Arsenal’s dominance. “There is a massive gulf between both teams — their XIs and the squads,” he said. “It will take Chelsea a while to get to that level, if they can get there. It doesn’t look like anyone can score against them.”

The defeat underlines the scale of the rebuild still facing Alonso, who took charge of Chelsea ahead of this season. While the attacking trio showed enough to suggest genuine potential, the broader structure and collective understanding that Arsenal have spent years building remains some distance away for the Blues.

Arsenal, meanwhile, strengthened their standing as favourites to retain the Premier League title, with Carragher describing them as “the finished article” and praising their ability to control a match even after falling behind — a scenario they rarely face.
