Odegaard's cracker rescues Arsenal as 10-game unbeaten run survives Chelsea fightback

Martin Odegaard’s brilliant winner secured Arsenal a comeback victory over Chelsea at the Emirates, keeping Mikel Arteta’s reigning Premier League champions with a perfect record this season. Chelsea had stunned the home crowd by taking the lead inside 77 seconds, but Arsenal’s quality ultimately told in a tense and absorbing London derby.

The opening goal arrived in chaotic fashion. Reece James’ free kick was not properly cleared, Jorrel Hato headed it on, and Morgan Rogers met the loose ball with a full-blooded volley that bounced past David Raya. The Norwegian missed large portions of last season through injury and was below his peak when available, but his performances for Norway at the World Cup signalled a return to the level that established him as one of Europe’s finest midfielders — and he carried that form into this contest.

Chelsea, for their part, showed enough to suggest Xabi Alonso’s side will be a genuine force this season. A dangerous forward line of Rogers, Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer caused Arsenal problems throughout, and substitute Estevao Willian produced one moment of late magic that was only denied by a superb last-gasp save from Raya.

The result extends Chelsea’s winless run against Arsenal to 12 matches, a sequence stretching back to August 2021. More significantly, it sends a statement of intent from a side that won last season’s title through defensive solidity and set-piece efficiency but now appears determined to add a more expansive, free-flowing dimension to their game.
