United hope Rashford's World Cup form attracts permanent buyers after Barcelona snub
Manchester United are seeking a permanent sale of Marcus Rashford this summer after Barcelona opted to sign Anthony Gordon instead. The club believes a strong World Cup showing could boost his £40m market value and widen interest from potential suitors including Bayern Munich.
Manchester United are hoping Marcus Rashford’s performances at the 2026 World Cup will help them secure a permanent transfer for the forward, after Barcelona declined to sign him for £26 million following his loan spell at the Nou Camp.
Rashford, 28, had a productive 18-month stint in Spain, registering 28 goal contributions in 49 appearances, but Barcelona ultimately moved for Anthony Gordon instead. He has since returned to United, where a reintegration under manager Michael Carrick is considered extremely unlikely. The club is also eager to remove his £325,000-a-week wages from the books.
United have a £40 million release clause written into Rashford’s contract, and he is firmly on the market this summer. Bayern Munich have been linked with a move, and Premier League clubs are also expected to register interest. Sources within the club suggest a strong World Cup tournament could both strengthen United’s negotiating position and attract a wider pool of potential buyers.
Rashford began England’s opening group game against Croatia on the bench but came on as a second-half substitute and scored, taking his international tally to 19 goals. His impact has fuelled growing calls for him to start the next fixture against Ghana.
Having spent time on loan at both Aston Villa and Barcelona over the past 18 months, Rashford’s United career appears to be at a definitive end. The club’s priority is now finding a permanent home for the academy graduate, with the World Cup providing a timely and high-profile platform for him to rebuild his market value ahead of the summer window.
