Manchester United and Chelsea are competing to sign West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen this summer, with the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship expected to trigger his departure from east London. West Ham value Bowen at around £50 million, though reports suggest a bid closer to £40 million could be sufficient to secure a deal.

Bowen, 29, has been among the Premier League’s standout performers this season, contributing 11 goals and 12 assists across all competitions. That form has drawn serious attention, with Chelsea now reportedly considering a move for the England international alongside United’s ongoing interest.

One factor that could give United an edge is surprisingly straightforward: Bowen’s preferred squad number. The forward has worn the No. 20 shirt for the majority of his career, including each of the last six seasons at the London Stadium. That number became available at Old Trafford after Diogo Dalot switched to the No. 2 shirt ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

At Chelsea, the situation is more complicated. Joao Pedro currently occupies the No. 20 shirt at Stamford Bridge. Although the Brazilian has been linked with a move to Barcelona, Chelsea are said to be unwilling to sell him following an impressive debut season in west London.

Chelsea’s interest in Bowen is nonetheless reported to be genuine. According to Metro, the club have monitored him for some time as new manager Xabi Alonso looks to add experience and versatility to his attacking options. Alonso has previously spoken warmly about Bowen, telling TNT Sports in 2024: “He’s one of the top players for sure, not just in terms of goals, but energy as well. He’s a real threat in their transitions in the last third — he has a great foot, so that’s why he’s one of the top players in the English squad.”

Beyond the shirt number, United can also offer Champions League football next season after finishing third in the Premier League under Michael Carrick — ending the campaign 19 points ahead of Chelsea. Bowen’s close ties with the West Ham fanbase may also make a cross-London move to Chelsea a harder sell than a switch to Old Trafford.

Bowen himself has not yet indicated where his future lies. Following West Ham’s relegation, he issued an emotional apology to supporters on social media. “It’s hard to post something like this when all you’re feeling is embarrassment and pain,” he wrote on Instagram.
