Manchester United’s Premier League campaign got off to a damaging start on Saturday as they fell 2-0 to newly-promoted Hull City, marking the first time the club has been beaten by a promoted side on an opening day of the season.

The result rattled confidence among supporters. A fan poll conducted by MEN Sport drew 9,713 responses, with 36 per cent of voters predicting United would finish fifth or lower this season — the single most popular answer. A more optimistic 21 per cent still believe the club can win the title, while 16 per cent backed a fourth-place finish, 14 per cent chose third, and just 13 per cent selected second.

United have been active in the transfer market ahead of what promises to be a demanding campaign. Carlos Baleba became the club’s latest arrival on Tuesday, joining for £65m plus £5m in add-ons. The midfielder links up with fellow new signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to bolster a midfield that struggled against Hull. Free agent goalkeeper Karl Darlow and several promising young players have also been brought in.

The recruitment drive comes as United prepare to compete in the Champions League this season, a return to European football’s top table that adds at least eight fixtures to an already congested schedule.

Despite the early setback, the squad will have a swift opportunity to respond. United face Ipswich Town on Sunday, though Baleba will not be available to make his debut in that fixture.
