Alonso's half-time demand for ball control unlocks Chelsea's 2-0 win over Manchester United
Xabi Alonso instructed Chelsea to 'be better with the ball' at half-time against Manchester United on Saturday, and second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer — plus a Lisandro Martinez red card — sealed a 2-0 Premier League victory.
Chelsea defeated Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Xabi Alonso’s half-time tactical adjustments proving decisive in a Premier League contest that was evenly poised at the break.
Alonso told his players to tighten their possession and reduce turnovers after a first half in which United created several clear-cut chances. The message was direct: “We said we were going to win this game with the ball, so the improvement has been with the ball. The message was to be better with the ball and to not give away that much.”
The Chelsea head coach also made tactical tweaks at the interval, and the effect was visible almost immediately in the second half. Morgan Rogers broke the deadlock before Lisandro Martinez was sent off for conceding a penalty, which Cole Palmer converted to make it 2-0 and effectively end the contest.
Alonso reflected on how improved ball retention fed directly into Chelsea’s defensive solidity. “We were more comfortable on the pitch with better control. When you feel better with the ball, normally the better you are defending as well. So I think that reaction, that change, has been important for the feeling and the goal as well.”
Describing the broader shape of the match, Alonso acknowledged United’s threat in the opening 45 minutes. “The first half was intense, with momentum for both sides. United had their chances and we were close as well. At half-time, we spoke and the reaction in the second half was better. We started quite well, got the lead, and we looked in better control. After it went 2-0 and the red card the context of the game changed, but it was not easy.”
Despite the defeat, interim United manager Michael Carrick confirmed he would remain in charge for the club’s Champions League fixture against Roma on Tuesday, insisting the performance showed improvement on recent weeks even if the result did not go their way.
