Four-goal Kai Rooney earns United insiders' backing for step up at 16
Kai Rooney scored four goals, including a second-half hat-trick, as Manchester United's under-18s beat Burnley 6-0. Multiple club insiders say the 16-year-old son of Wayne Rooney is ready to take on greater responsibility after a bright start to the season.
Kai Rooney scored four goals in Manchester United’s 6-0 under-18 demolition of Burnley, prompting multiple club insiders to suggest the 16-year-old is ready to step up through the academy ranks. The four-goal haul — which included a perfect hat-trick in the second half, with goals from both feet — lifted his record to five goals and one assist in just three appearances this season.
The son of United’s all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney has already trained and played above his age group this term, featuring for the under-21s and earning minutes in the under-19 UEFA Youth League. Those opportunities reflect a growing belief inside the club that the teenager, who turns 17 this week, is developing into a genuine prospect.
“As a player, Kai impacts games; he’s tenacious, he has an eye for goal,” one club insider told The Athletic. “We are now interested to see what he’s like as he gets fitter and healthier since he had injuries and setbacks last year. Now, he’s been able to get into a rhythm since the start of the year. That’s key — that’s the first time it has happened at the higher levels.”
Primarily a right winger who is left-footed but comfortable on either side, Rooney draws obvious comparisons with his father in terms of his goalscoring instinct and physical profile. A second United source described him as “a goalscorer who is quick off the shoulder” and “explosive over five to ten yards”, adding: “He’s not the biggest — he’s going to be like his dad’s build. Small, squat, aggressive. When he’s on it, he’s on it. He just has to be more consistent. But he has moments like against Burnley where he can get you off the edge of your seat.”
A coach with direct experience of working with Kai echoed that assessment: “He’s got a load of self-confidence. He’s an accurate shooter with a powerful, clean shot — good traits going for him as a striker. He was injured and I’m glad he’s through that and playing well.”
A first-team debut remains a longer-term prospect, though the club’s current struggles and injury concerns elsewhere in the squad have at least kept the conversation alive. For now, the focus inside Carrington is on maintaining Rooney’s momentum and building the consistency that would mark the next stage of his development.
