Johan Micoud left L’Équipe channel at the end of the 2025-2026 season, ending twelve years of presence on the show L’Équipe du Soir, which he joined in 2014. His departure is part of an editorial and budgetary overhaul that led to the non-renewal of many commentators.

Contrary to what the wave of departures suggested, Micoud clarified in an interview with Ouest-France that his exit was by mutual agreement. “We didn’t see eye to eye on what came next. I had the impression of losing that human side in the work that I enjoy. It’s not a big deal, we said goodbye,” said the former French international.

The transition was swift. Marc Las and Jérôme Cazadieu, two former L’Équipe channel figures who moved to Ligue 1+, contacted him as soon as they learned of his departure. Since the start of the 2026-2027 season, Micoud has worked as a commentator and consultant on the channel dedicated to the French championship.

“I’m fortunate to commentate matches where there are often plot twists. I love the teams I work with, there’s a very human side to it. I enjoy going back to the pitch, rediscovering stadiums. Some weren’t finished the last time I was commentating,” he explained, referring to his time on Prime Video during the 2021-2022 season. “I’m having a blast,” he summed up.

An emblematic figure of French football in the 2000s, Micoud notably played for Girondins de Bordeaux and Werder Brême before transitioning into media.
