United eye Rashford-Fernandes double play as Tottenham complicate both deals
Manchester United are working to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes but face a potential Tottenham rival bid, while Spurs are also pursuing Marcus Rashford — a dynamic that could give United unexpected leverage in both negotiations.
Manchester United are pursuing West Ham’s 21-year-old midfielder Mateus Fernandes as their second signing of the summer, but face the prospect of Tottenham complicating the deal while simultaneously attempting to sign Marcus Rashford from Old Trafford.
Spurs have already moved decisively in this window, completing the £52 million signing of Jan Paul van Hecke and entering talks with Newcastle over Italy international Sandro Tonali — a deal Newcastle are reportedly valuing at close to £100 million. Despite that outlay, Tottenham are also said to be considering a move for Fernandes, which would create a bidding war United are keen to avoid.
United are willing to sell Rashford this summer, but only at the right price. The club have indicated to Rashford’s representatives that they would sanction a departure for £40 million, though his salary of around £325,000 a week remains a significant obstacle for potential suitors. The 28-year-old forward’s wage demands make it difficult for clubs to justify that fee, and United may ultimately need to negotiate downward.
The overlap between the two deals presents a potential lever for United. If they can persuade Tottenham to stand down on Fernandes — perhaps sweetened by facilitating the Rashford move — they would secure a clearer run at the West Ham midfielder. Whether Spurs cool their interest in Fernandes naturally, should the Tonali deal consume their budget, remains to be seen.
Fernandes has attracted reported interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Arsenal, but United have been the most active pursuers. West Ham, who posted a £104 million loss in their latest financial results and are now preparing for Championship football after relegation, are understood to want a competitive bidding environment to maximise his transfer fee. Club officials acknowledged earlier this year that player sales were necessary regardless of their top-flight status — that need is now more acute.
At 21 and already a Portugal international, Fernandes represents one of the most attractive assets in the current window. West Ham’s financial pressures may ultimately force a swift resolution, but the club will be reluctant to accept United’s terms without at least the appearance of competition.
