Donte Johnson kept his unbeaten record intact with a first-round knockout of Eric McConico at UFC 330 in Philadelphia on Saturday, improving to 9-0 and immediately calling for a run at the middleweight title.

The prospect landed a fight-ending left hand to put McConico on the canvas, with the referee stepping in shortly after Johnson landed a follow-up shot on the ground. It was Johnson’s third UFC victory and his most emphatic yet.

McConico was not simply a passive opponent. Despite Johnson entering as a heavy favourite, McConico weathered the early exchanges and found his own moments before the decisive blow landed.

“Feeling blessed and highly favored,” Johnson said in his post-fight interview. “One guy wins and the Lord made that guy today. My game has elevated exponentially. It’s inevitable when you’re training with the best in the world every single day. I’m training with [Sean] Strickland every day.”

Johnson credited his daily work alongside former middleweight champion Sean Strickland as a key driver of his development, and wasted no time in setting out his long-term ambitions.

“I want to be a champion; I want to be a champion at middleweight,” Johnson added. “I want to be a multiple-time champion by the time I hang my gloves up.”

At 9-0 with three wins inside the UFC, Johnson is positioning himself as one of the division’s most watchable rising forces. Whether the promotion moves him toward ranked opposition next will determine how quickly that title ambition can be tested.
