Ugarte's ACL blow forces Manchester United into unplanned third midfield signing
Manuel Ugarte is facing up to 10 months out after suffering a serious knee ligament injury during Uruguay's World Cup clash with Spain, effectively ruling him out for most of the 2026/27 season and derailing United's summer transfer plans.
Manuel Ugarte faces up to 10 months on the sidelines after sustaining a serious knee ligament injury during Uruguay’s World Cup group-stage match against Spain, Manchester United confirmed on Sunday. The 23-year-old was carried off on a stretcher and, in a social media post, described his injury as “the most serious injury a footballer can face” — strongly indicating a torn anterior cruciate ligament rather than the less severe medial collateral ligament.
Ugarte’s message offered a candid insight into the emotional weight of the moment. “Suffering the most serious injury a footballer can face in one of the most important matches in my country’s history, and seeing it end this way without being able to stay on the pitch and support my teammates until the final whistle, is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life,” he wrote. He added that he was grateful to both Uruguay and United for their immediate support, and vowed to use the setback as motivation.
The timing compounds what was already a difficult chapter for the Uruguayan. Ugarte had been widely expected to leave Old Trafford this summer after a limited and frustrating debut season in England, with the World Cup seen as a platform to attract interest from other clubs. The injury now makes a summer sale effectively impossible, leaving United carrying a player who will be unavailable for the vast majority of the new campaign.
The knock-on effect for United’s transfer business is significant. The club had already agreed a deal for Ederson and were pursuing a second midfield addition, with the assumption that a Ugarte sale would free up funds and a squad place for a replacement. With Ugarte now unable to move on, United still need that replacement — meaning a third midfield signing is now likely required rather than optional.
As things stand, Kobbie Mainoo, Ederson, Mason Mount, Tyler Fletcher, and one further new arrival appear set to form United’s midfield options for a schedule that could exceed 60 games. Fletcher’s emergence from the academy last season has given the club some flexibility, but the depth required for a full domestic and European programme means the unplanned addition looks unavoidable.
