Netherlands exit 2026 World Cup unbeaten, stretching 16-year record streak to 16 games
The Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco on penalties at Monterrey but leave the 2026 World Cup with their unbeaten run in regulation and extra time intact — now 16 straight games without a loss stretching back to the 2010 final.
The Netherlands crashed out of the 2026 World Cup on Monday, losing to Morocco in a penalty shootout at Monterrey Stadium, yet they depart with one remarkable record still standing: 16 consecutive World Cup matches without a defeat in regulation or extra time.
Because penalty shootout results are officially recorded as draws, the Dutch maintain a run of 10 wins and six draws across those 16 games — the longest such unbeaten streak in World Cup history. Their last outright loss came in the 2010 final, and they have since been eliminated twice via shootouts, in 2022 and again on Monday, without that record being broken.
The defeat does, however, end a separate and equally eye-catching run. The Netherlands had scored multiple goals in six consecutive World Cup matches — the longest such streak in their history — but were unable to extend it against Morocco.
More painfully, this marks only the second time the Netherlands have failed to reach the quarterfinals at a World Cup, and the first since 2006. The Dutch reached the final in 2010, finished third in 2014, and made the last eight in 2022, having missed the 2018 tournament entirely through qualification failure.
There was a further statistical curiosity to their 2026 campaign: the Netherlands never trailed in any of their five matches. They won two of three group-stage games and drew the other two without falling behind, before Monday’s shootout defeat ended their run.
Despite the consistency those numbers reflect, the Netherlands have never lifted the World Cup trophy. They remain one of the tournament’s most decorated underachievers — a side capable of deep runs and historic streaks, but still waiting for the ultimate prize.
