Injured Ugarte forces Manchester United to weigh move for Sunderland's Granit Xhaka
Manuel Ugarte's knee ligament injury has left Manchester United short in midfield, prompting links to Granit Xhaka — the 33-year-old Sunderland captain Chelsea have already had an £8m bid rejected for.
Manuel Ugarte’s knee ligament injury has forced Manchester United to reassess their midfield plans for next season, with Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka emerging as a potential target after Chelsea had an £8 million bid for the 33-year-old rejected.
Ugarte’s injury, sustained during the World Cup, rules him out for the majority of the coming campaign and removes the option of selling him to fund further recruitment. United will receive around £6.4 million in FIFA compensation for the injury, but that sum will not stretch far in a transfer market where West Ham are holding out for £85 million for Mateus Fernandes — a deal United continue to pursue.
Even if a Fernandes agreement is reached, United face the prospect of heading into a season that could exceed 60 games with a largely inexperienced midfield core. Kobbie Mainoo and Fernandes are both 21, summer signing Ederson — who turns 27 next month — has no Premier League experience, and Mason Mount, who dropped into a deeper role late last season, has struggled with injuries throughout his Old Trafford career. Teenager Tyler Fletcher is the next option from the academy.
Xhaka, who captained Sunderland through an impressive seventh-place Premier League finish last season, playing all but four games, has been identified as a leader capable of filling the void left by Casemiro’s departure. Chelsea’s interest stems from his relationship with new Stamford Bridge head coach Xabi Alonso, under whom Xhaka thrived at Bayer Leverkusen.
Sunderland have already rebuffed Chelsea’s opening offer, and United would face competition if they entered the race. A deal for Xhaka may not generate widespread excitement among supporters, but his experience and availability within the Premier League make him a pragmatic option for a club navigating a significant midfield injury crisis.
