Tyler Fletcher earns World Cup call-up after Gilmour injury rocks Scotland squad
Manchester United midfielder Tyler Fletcher has been called into Scotland's World Cup squad as a late replacement for Billy Gilmour, who suffered a knee injury in the team's final pre-tournament friendly. Fletcher made his senior Scotland debut just 24 hours before receiving the call.
Tyler Fletcher will travel to the World Cup with Scotland after Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour was ruled out with a knee injury sustained in the national team’s final home friendly before the tournament. The Manchester United youngster had made his senior Scotland debut against Curacao on Saturday — less than 24 hours before being selected ahead of three other candidates to fill Gilmour’s place in the squad.
Scotland are appearing at the World Cup for the first time since 1998, making the tournament a landmark occasion for the country regardless of results. For Fletcher, the timing is remarkable: he had initially joined the squad only to train with the senior group before they departed for the United States, but Gilmour’s misfortune transformed that arrangement entirely.
Veteran Scotland midfielder Kenny McClean was effusive in his praise of the 19-year-old after watching him in training and in the Curacao match. “People speak about the future, but a lot of these young lads are the present,” McClean said. “Tyler came on, and I can’t speak highly enough of him. I said to the lads after his first session, ‘I can see something special in him.’” McClean also noted a family connection, adding that he had played alongside Tyler’s father Darren in his early Scotland squads and that the son shares many of the same qualities.
Darren Fletcher, a former Manchester United and Scotland midfielder, watched his son’s debut from the stands at Hampden Park alongside Tyler’s twin brother Jack. Tyler’s progress this season had been driven by consistent performances in academy fixtures, which brought him to the attention of the Scotland coaching staff and earned him the Denzil Haroun Reserve-Team Player of the Year award at club level. He also made his second senior appearance for United against Brighton on the final day of the Premier League season.
While Jack Fletcher had previously attracted more attention among supporters, Tyler’s development has accelerated sharply over the past year. His defensive midfield qualities and composure in senior surroundings have clearly convinced the Scotland management that he is ready for the biggest stage of his career.
