Tuchel warns Bellingham his England starting spot is far from guaranteed at World Cup 2026
Thomas Tuchel has made clear that Jude Bellingham is not assured of a starting role at the World Cup, with the Real Madrid midfielder in a three-way battle with Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze for England's No.10 position.
Thomas Tuchel has delivered a pointed message to Jude Bellingham ahead of the World Cup, insisting England are capable of winning the tournament without their most recognisable star and that the midfielder must earn his place in the starting XI.
Bellingham is one of three players competing for England’s No.10 role, with Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze pushing the Real Madrid man hard. The competition comes to a head with England’s Group opener against Croatia on June 17, and Tuchel has given no guarantees over who will start.
“We have a lot of proof we can win football matches without Jude and that’s the more important headline,” Tuchel said. “Jude is in amazing form but we have to stop talking about individuals. Jude will not win this World Cup alone. It’s simply impossible.”
The England manager stressed the importance of collective over individual, raising the hypothetical of an injury to Bellingham to underline why depth and squad unity matter more than any single player’s status.
“It is a big decision because all three players who are competing are starters on the highest level, and there are a lot of arguments for all of them starting,” Tuchel added. “They need to understand that not all of them will start all of the time, and they can still be upset with my decision — but they have to accept it and push their team-mates.”
Tuchel also outlined the tactical flexibility available to him. Bellingham could be deployed in a No.8 role rather than as the advanced playmaker, while Rogers has the ability to operate on the wings. That versatility, the manager suggested, gives him options across a tournament he described as potentially nine matches long.
“Jude and Morgan are very, very close with each other — they are fighting for this spot,” Tuchel said. “We will not go through the tournament with 10 players.”
The comments reflect a broader philosophy from Tuchel since taking charge of England: squad cohesion and competition for places are non-negotiable, regardless of a player’s club reputation.
