Tuchel urges England fans to stay calm after Ghana stalemate leaves Group L wide open

Thomas Tuchel defended England's goalless draw with Ghana in Boston, insisting the African side posed a tougher test than most second-round opponents at the World Cup. England now need a strong result against Panama in New Jersey to secure top spot in Group L.

Thomas Tuchel called on England supporters to keep perspective after his side were held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana in Boston, a result that leaves Group L undecided heading into the final round of fixtures against Panama in New Jersey on Saturday.

England created half-chances and threatened from set pieces but could not find a breakthrough against a disciplined Ghanaian side ranked 64th in the world. Tuchel was unapologetic about the performance, arguing that few teams at this World Cup have faced a comparable second-group-stage opponent.

“I saw some second-round matches from big nations and I’m sorry but with respect there was not the level of Ghana on the other side of the pitch,” the England manager said. “We were facing a very physical team and Ghana were good. We created half chances, we created deliveries and set plays but couldn’t score from it to change the characteristic of the game.”

Tuchel acknowledged the frustration among supporters but pushed back against any suggestion of a crisis. “I know it’s not an easy watch, I know. Maybe I watch it differently from the sideline as a coach,” he said. “It’s the reality. There is a long way to go and no one won a World Cup with four goals per match and going for it. There is no need to feel negative.”

The England boss made changes to his defensive line, bringing in Marc Guehi to partner Ezri Konsa at centre-back, and was quick to credit the backline for limiting Ghana to just two counter-attacking moments of danger across the full 90 minutes. “The credit goes to the team, and to the structure, and to the discipline that we didn’t allow more,” he said.

Tuchel also drew a parallel with England’s qualifying campaign, when a laboured 2-0 win over Andorra at Villa Park was followed three days later by a 5-0 victory in Serbia. He suggested the reaction required now is similar, though he stopped short of saying the Ghana display was a failure.

“This was a complicated match today and it can happen,” he said. “I was not concerned after Andorra and it was not as though I said we need a reaction because we were not good enough. And that was not my speech today to the players.”

England go into the Panama fixture needing a win to guarantee first place in Group L, with Tuchel having hoped a victory over Ghana would have allowed him to rotate his squad for the final group game.
