Tuchel shuts down reporter's Gordon question after England's 3-2 Nations League defeat to Spain

Thomas Tuchel deflected a reporter’s suggestion that Anthony Gordon’s goal encapsulated England’s path to success with a dry one-liner, after the Three Lions fell 3-2 to Spain in their UEFA Nations League opener at Wembley on Saturday.

Spain took the lead inside two minutes when Lamine Yamal pickpocketed Marc Guehi on the edge of the area and slotted past James Trafford. Gordon equalised on the counter-attack with around ten minutes of the first half remaining, before Harry Kane headed England in front — the ball deflecting off Marc Cucurella’s thigh and past goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

Kane had the chance to extend the lead just after the break from the penalty spot, but slipped on the Wembley turf, double-struck the ball and conceded a free-kick to Spain instead. Goals from Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal then turned the game on its head, handing the world champions all three points in north London.

Speaking on ITV after the final whistle, Tuchel was asked whether Gordon’s finish — a sharp, direct counter-attack move — represented the template England should follow. The head coach was in no mood to entertain the framing.

“No, the Anthony Gordon goal was a counter-attack,” Tuchel said with a wry smile, before adding: “The ball went in… a counter-attack.”

The clipped response underlined Tuchel’s reluctance to draw sweeping conclusions from a single moment in a defeat, though the manner of England’s collapse — conceding twice in the second half after leading — will give the German coach more substantive issues to address ahead of the next Nations League fixture.
