One source close to a first-team player described the Atlético performance as a disaster precisely because nothing had changed. A second source suggested the footballing problems mattered more than any grievance with referees.

The numbers underline the concern. Kylian Mbappé, Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior combined for no shots on target against Atlético — a stat The Athletic links directly to the continued absence of the creative midfielder Mourinho had sought to sign over the summer. Madrid had won six of their opening seven games in all competitions before the derby, their only other defeat a 1-0 loss at Real Betis.
