Spain Stuns England at Wembley Despite Kane's Missed Penalty
Trailing 2-1 at halftime after Harry Kane missed a penalty, Spain came from behind to beat England 3-2 on Saturday at Wembley in the opening match of their Nations League campaign, thanks to goals from Baena and Oyarzabal.
Spain overturned England 3-2 at Wembley on Saturday evening, securing a successful start to their Nations League campaign two months after winning the World Cup. La Roja had to battle hard to claim victory after falling behind late in the first half.
Lamine Yamal had given the world champions an ideal start in the 2nd minute. The Barcelona prospect capitalized on a Marc Guéhi error to finish past James Trafford with a left-footed strike. But Spain lost focus before the break: Anthony Gordon equalized in the 36th minute, then Harry Kane turned the game around in the 40th to give the Three Lions the advantage.
The Bayern Munich striker then had a chance to extend the lead, but his penalty hit the crossbar of Unai Simón in the 54th minute — a miss that would prove costly.
La Roja seized on this turning point to regain control. Alex Baena equalized in the 60th minute, before Mikel Oyarzabal gave Spain the decisive advantage with a well-taken chip in the 74th minute. Three goals in the second half for a hard-fought victory that confirms the mental strength of Luis de la Fuente’s side.
