Tuchel reveals half-time speech that sparked England's second-half demolition of Croatia
England trailed Croatia's rhythm in a nervy first half before Thomas Tuchel urged his players to stop protecting the result and play their way. Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford then sealed a commanding 4-2 World Cup opening win.
Thomas Tuchel told his England players to stop sitting back and play their natural game at half-time, and the Three Lions responded with a second-half masterclass to beat Croatia 4-2 in their World Cup opener.
England went into the break level despite Harry Kane twice putting them ahead, with Tuchel admitting his side had been too conservative and were effectively defending with seven men without actually defending well. A damning first-half statistic — just 33 per cent of ground duels won — underlined how far below their level England had been.
Tuchel revealed the substance of his dressing-room address to ITV after the match. “Even if we lose, it will not change my perception of the last 17 days — but let’s do it our way,” he said. “We were too focused on protecting the result. We were a back seven and we didn’t defend. If the result doesn’t go our way, we want to play our way. I tried to encourage them to go for it.”
The response was immediate. Jude Bellingham drove into the box and finished clinically past Dominik Livakovic just two minutes into the second half to make it 3-2, before Marcus Rashford added a fourth to put the result beyond doubt.
Kane confirmed the half-time talk had landed, and Bellingham echoed that assessment from the pitch. “It wasn’t one of those where it was a big drama or standing up and shouting — it was what the team needed,” the Real Madrid midfielder said. “We have a mature group with great leaders in there; everyone knew the level we had to get to. The start of the second half gave us a great platform.”
Tuchel acknowledged the first half had been far from convincing but took clear satisfaction in the collective response. “Good reaction — the first half was a bit complicated for us. It was a bit nervy. The decisions we took, we chose to go safe and go backwards. We struggled to find any rhythm and didn’t have the confidence to go through the gaps,” he said.
“I saw a statistic of 33 per cent of ground duels won in the first half and 73 per cent in the second, so even off the ball was not good enough, not committed enough. I loved the reaction of the players in the second half. It was emotional — there were a lot of emotions involved. It took us a while to get going.”
The 4-2 victory gives England a strong platform in their World Cup group, with Tuchel’s ability to reset his side at the interval already proving a decisive factor in his first competitive tournament game in charge.
