Tuchel names Quansah, Gordon and Saka for England's round-of-16 clash with Mexico
Thomas Tuchel will make three changes to his England starting XI for Monday's World Cup round-of-16 tie against co-hosts Mexico, with Jarell Quansah, Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka all recalled.
Thomas Tuchel has confirmed three changes to his England starting XI for their World Cup round-of-16 meeting with co-hosts Mexico at Mexico City Stadium on Monday, a venue that carries painful history for the Three Lions after their 1986 quarter-final exit on the same ground.
Jarell Quansah returns at right-back after missing the round-of-32 victory over DR Congo through injury. The Bayer Leverkusen defender, a central defender by trade, had assumed the role following Reece James’s hamstring injury in the group-stage draw with Ghana. Tottenham’s Djed Spence deputised in his absence, with Declan Rice also filling in during the closing stages. The 23-year-old had himself been forced off against Panama with an ankle problem but has recovered in time to reclaim his place.
Anthony Gordon is also handed a recall to the starting line-up after being left out for consecutive matches against Panama and DR Congo. The Barcelona winger, who featured as a substitute in the latter, had been displaced on the left flank by Marcus Rashford. Gordon wasted little time making his presence felt when he came on against DR Congo, providing both assists for Harry Kane in the comeback win that sealed England’s place in the last 16.
Bukayo Saka completes the trio of changes, coming in for Arsenal teammate Noni Madueke as Tuchel opts for a more dynamic attacking approach against the tournament’s co-hosts.
England arrive at Mexico City Stadium looking to end Mexico’s 10-game unbeaten run at the World Cup, a record that underlines the scale of the task facing Tuchel’s side in what is their most significant fixture of the tournament so far.
