England vs Mexico World Cup last-16 kick-off threatened by Azteca storm
A severe electrical storm has struck Mexico City roughly three hours before England's scheduled 1am World Cup round-of-16 kick-off against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, triggering safety protocols that have closed the pitch and barred supporters from entering.
A violent electrical storm swept across Mexico City on the eve of England’s World Cup round-of-16 clash with Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, throwing the scheduled 1am kick-off into serious doubt and forcing officials to activate the venue’s electrical storm safety protocol.
Torrential rain, thunder, and lightning arrived approximately three hours before the scheduled start. Under the stadium’s strict safety rules, nobody is permitted onto the playing surface while the protocol is active. Media representatives were instructed to remain inside the media centre, and supporters were barred from entering the ground entirely — despite gates having been due to open three hours before kick-off. Those inside the stadium described the thunder as deafening.
The England team bus arrived at the venue slightly behind schedule. Players had been expected to reach the stadium around 90 minutes before kick-off, but their arrivals were delayed by the conditions. Officials confirmed that no formal decision on a potential postponement will be taken until approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled start, with the weather to be assessed as close to kick-off as possible.
Should conditions remain unsafe at that point, the match will be delayed by an initial 30 minutes and then reassessed in further rolling 30-minute windows until it is judged safe to play. BBC meteorologist Tomasz Schafernaker warned that thunderstorms and shower clouds developing around Mexico City were likely to linger for several hours.
The disruption echoes a similar incident at the same venue during Mexico’s round-of-32 victory over Ecuador, when the kick-off was pushed back by an hour due to storms.
Earlier in the week, discussions had taken place about moving the fixture forward to midday local time in light of the poor forecast. Both the Football Association and the Mexican Football Federation opposed the change — the FA citing the disruption it would cause to travelling England supporters — and FIFA ultimately retained the original schedule.
Safety concerns had also extended beyond the weather. Senior officials approached FIFA about altering the kick-off time following a tragic crowd crush after Mexico’s win against Ecuador at the Azteca, which resulted in four deaths. Those requests were ultimately unsuccessful, leaving the match exposed to both the security risks and the storm that has now materialised.
