Tuchel grants England squad a free day in Florida with one firm rule before World Cup begins
Thomas Tuchel has given his 26-man England squad a day off in Florida ahead of their World Cup campaign, allowing players to explore the state freely — on the condition that no one boards a flight before the squad relocates to Kansas City on Saturday.
Thomas Tuchel has handed his England players an almost unrestricted day off in West Palm Beach, Florida, with a single non-negotiable condition: no flights until the squad departs for their World Cup training base in Kansas City on Saturday.
The England manager confirmed the arrangement ahead of the team’s opening Group Stage fixture against Croatia next Wednesday, describing it as a deliberate mental reset before the tournament begins in earnest. Players are reportedly planning trips to South Beach in Miami, theme parks, and other Florida destinations with partners, family, and friends, who have been permitted to join the squad at their training base throughout the preparation camp.
“They can almost do what they want,” Tuchel said. “For example, they can’t take a flight. They can almost do what they want but we said no flights because hopefully we have a lot of flights through the tournament.”
Tuchel was clear that the decision to grant the freedom reflects his confidence in the group’s professionalism rather than a relaxation of standards. “No-one has asked for a flight. They are adults, they are determined as well so the trust is not only a one-way street. We expect them to live up to the trust, the responsibility we give them.”
The manager drew a quiet contrast with some of England’s more chaotic pre-tournament moments — most notably the infamous ‘Dentist’s Chair’ drinking session in Asia ahead of Euro 96 — without referencing it directly, instead emphasising the maturity he has observed in this squad.
“Everything I have seen of them is a determined group who have a dream but know what it takes, and I have full belief and trust that they will not gamble on that,” he added.
Tuchel framed the tournament in terms of individual chapters, with the group stage representing the next one. “The players are getting one and a half days off to relax and switch off, not only physically but mentally, and then we start the next chapter. We go chapter to chapter. Our location has been amazing but it’s good to switch the brain.”
England’s first training session in Kansas City is scheduled for Saturday, giving the squad two days to settle before preparations for the Croatia match intensify.
