England began their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia in Group L, but it was what happened in the dressing room at half-time that has captured attention. With the score locked at 2-2, Thomas Tuchel sharply rebuked his players, particularly goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

According to Geoff Shreeves, reporter for Fox, the German manager directly confronted Pickford after a poor pass-out that did not follow the established tactical instructions. “Do what I tell you!” Tuchel reportedly said, furious. The tone escalated when the Everton goalkeeper responded to his coach.

Gary Neville, ITV pundit, confirmed the intensity of the scene: “Tuchel gave them a memorable dressing-down at half-time, they were battered.” The message clearly got through. After the restart, the Three Lions scored two additional goals without conceding, displaying far more defensive solidity than in the first half.

Harry Kane, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham all delivered on the offensive front, but it was the defensive stability regained in the second period that allowed England to finish without wavering.

Assistant coach Anthony Barry acknowledged that the squad had approached this opening match with a degree of nervousness. “I think there was a lot of nervous energy at the start of the match. Perhaps that has to be accepted, and perhaps it was predictable for an opening match of a World Cup,” he conceded.

Tuchel’s method, direct and uncompromising, appears to have produced the desired effect from the first match. England tops Group L with three points.
