Kompany 'proud' of City titles despite guilty verdict on 100-plus financial rule breaches
Vincent Kompany says he remains proud of what Manchester City achieved during his playing years, after an independent commission found the club guilty of more than 100 Premier League financial rule breaches spanning nine seasons from 2009-10 to 2017-18.
Vincent Kompany has said he remains proud of Manchester City’s achievements during his time at the club, after an independent commission found City guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules covering nine seasons between 2009-10 and 2017-18.
Kompany, now head coach of Bayern Munich, captained City for over a decade after joining in 2008 and leaving in 2019. During that period he won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups — three of those league titles falling within the seasons the commission identified as breaching financial regulations.
“I played 11 years for the club. I’ve loved all of the years I played for the club and everything we achieved and done on the pitch, that’s something I’m really proud of,” Kompany said. “Everything else, as a player you’re not a part of that and right now as a coach of Bayern Munich I’m not too much occupied with that topic as I’m preparing the game next week and preparing the game we have tomorrow and everything I have as a coach.”
City have continued to deny any wrongdoing since the verdict was announced and confirmed last Friday that they have formally lodged an appeal. In a statement, the club said the commission’s opinion “contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe,” adding that “a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions.”
Under Premier League rules, an appeal hearing must be held within 12 weeks of the appeal being lodged, with a decision required within 30 days of the hearing’s conclusion. The hearing itself can last no longer than five days. A fresh appeal board will be appointed by the chair of the Premier League’s judicial panel, and may allow the appeal, dismiss it, or make any other order it sees fit.
