JJ Gabriel 'to cost £8.5m' as Real Madrid, Barcelona and PSG circle Manchester United teenager
JJ Gabriel, 16, is training alone in Barcelona after requesting to leave Manchester United, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and PSG all holding meetings with the teenager and his agent. Any interested club faces a reported total package of £8.5m to secure his signature.
JJ Gabriel is training away from Manchester United in Barcelona as four of Europe’s biggest clubs circle the 16-year-old, with a reported total package of £8.5m (€10m) required to prise him from Old Trafford.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have all held meetings with Gabriel and his super-agent Ali Barat, according to Spanish outlet Sport. The teenager triggered the standoff after requesting to leave United over a lack of first-team opportunities, sending shockwaves through the club.
Gabriel featured during pre-season, with his family expecting him to begin stepping up to senior football this campaign. There had been expectations he would play at least 20 minutes in the Champions League fixture against Sabah and the Carabao Cup clash with Brighton, before potentially making his Premier League debut on October 25. Those assurances did not materialise, and the situation deteriorated from there.
His representatives are understood to have made four formal requests to United, including guarantees over the number 77 shirt and permission to have ‘Gabriel JR’ printed on the back. The club’s response to those demands is not detailed in the reports, but Gabriel has since been training independently in Spain.
The reported £8.5m package breaks down into a three-year contract worth more than €1m (£850,000) per season, agent commissions, compensation for his family, and a payment to United. Should Gabriel instead sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club, United could receive as little as £300,000 in compensation.
Barcelona sporting director Deco has publicly denied the Catalan club’s interest, though Gabriel is reported to have already visited Barcelona to hear a proposal from the club. Reports indicate he first travelled to France before heading to Spain for a series of meetings.
Any move remains legally complex. Gabriel’s only current tie to United is his Premier League youth registration, which requires the consent of all parties — the club, the player, and his parent or legal guardian — before it can be cancelled. Gabriel turned 16 on October 6 and holds a European Union passport, making him eligible in principle to join an EU club, but any international transfer involving a player under 18 still requires FIFA approval under strict governing regulations.
