Eight months without playing, Lucas Chevalier considering PSG exit in January
Backup to Safonov since his last appearance on January 23 against Auxerre, Lucas Chevalier (24) could request a departure during the winter transfer window to regain playing time and revive his international career.
Lucas Chevalier has not played a single minute of official competition with PSG since January 23, a 1-0 victory against Auxerre. Eight months later, the 24-year-old goalkeeper remains firmly in the shadow of Matveï Safonov, and a January departure is shaping up as the most likely solution.
The former Lille player had joined Paris with the status of a great prospect for French football. But his Paris trajectory never took off. His only recent appearance amounts to a half in a summer friendly against Majorque — a meager record for a player who, a year earlier, seemed on track to establish himself permanently in the France squad.
Excluded from the Blues since March, Chevalier missed the World Cup and now sees new competitors emerging for the national goalkeeper position, notably Guillaume Restes and Jean Butez. At almost 25 years old, this chronic lack of playing time is directly weighing on his progression and international ambitions.
At PSG, his behavior is praised without reservation. After a summer meeting with Luis Enrique, he had chosen to stay and fight for his place. His efforts in training, real according to those around him who highlight his resilience at the Poissy Campus, have nonetheless not been enough to shake the confidence that the Paris staff places in the Russian goalkeeper. The club’s approach regarding Zion Suzuki’s profile last summer further illustrates the management’s caution regarding Chevalier.
Faced with a frozen hierarchy, the option of a loan or transfer in January is gaining traction. PSG is not closing the door, but is not pushing it open either. “It’s too early. We don’t know what can happen in the coming months,” those around the club indicate. Without a rebalancing of the hierarchy before the winter window, Lucas Chevalier’s Paris adventure should conclude sooner than expected.
