Thomas Tuchel stormed to the touchline to confront Jordan Pickford just 17 minutes into England’s World Cup Group Stage opener against Croatia, berating his goalkeeper for ignoring specific distribution instructions during a chaotic first half that produced four goals, a retaken penalty, and VAR intervention.

With England leading 1-0, Pickford played out from the back in the wrong direction, appearing to suggest to Tuchel that he had been off-balance. The explanation did little to satisfy the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager. Sideline reporter Geoff Shreeves, positioned close to the incident, caught the full exchange.

“Thomas Tuchel was straight out to the touchline and said ‘no, put it out to the right back, you don’t go that side,’” Shreeves reported. “Pickford had a little go back and Tuchel was not impressed. He told him ‘you know what you’re supposed to do, do as I told you.’”

The goalkeeper’s afternoon only grew more difficult from there. Croatia equalised through Martin Baturina’s curled strike from the edge of the box, before Peter Musa added a second with a neat finish set up by a clever header back from Ivan Perisic — leaving Pickford having conceded twice before the break.

England’s first half was far from straightforward in attack either. Harry Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot, but only after a first attempt was retaken — Dominik Livaković had guessed correctly to save Kane’s initial stutter-run effort, yet was adjudged to have left his line early. Kane dispensed with the stutter on the retake and found the far corner. He then restored England’s lead with a spectacular header, only for Musa to level again before half-time.

Pickford was not the only England player to face scrutiny. At the interval, Tuchel’s assistant Anthony Barry gave a pointed interview in which he criticised the team’s decision-making, reflecting the frustration felt in the England dugout after a first 45 minutes that swung repeatedly between promise and defensive frailty.
