Tottenham's opening bid for Brighton's Van Hecke rejected as Chelsea and Liverpool circle
Tottenham have had an initial offer for Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke turned down, with the Seagulls holding firm on a £70 million valuation. Chelsea and Liverpool are also monitoring the Netherlands international, who has one year left on his contract.
Tottenham’s pursuit of Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke has hit an early obstacle after the Premier League club had their opening bid rejected, with Brighton standing firm on a valuation of around £70 million. Chelsea and Liverpool have also been identified as interested parties in the Netherlands international, intensifying the competition for his signature.
According to The Telegraph, talks between Spurs and Brighton are set to continue despite the gap in valuations. Van Hecke, 24, previously worked under Roberto De Zerbi at the Amex Stadium, and De Zerbi — now in charge at Spurs — is understood to be keen on a reunion with the centre-back in north London.
With just one year remaining on his Brighton contract, Van Hecke’s situation gives Spurs some leverage, though Brighton have shown little willingness to accept below their asking price at this stage. The defender’s contract status could become a more significant factor as the summer progresses.
Van Hecke would be Tottenham’s third defensive addition of the window if a deal is concluded. Spurs have already agreed terms with Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, both arriving on free transfers following their exits from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively. Those signings were contingent on Tottenham retaining their Premier League status, which they secured on the final day of the season with a win over Everton, as West Ham United were relegated to the Championship.
Former Spurs midfielder Sandro has publicly backed the club to move for Van Hecke, drawing on his knowledge of both the player and De Zerbi’s methods. “He’s not only good on the ball, but he can be very aggressive and in a way that he’s not stupid,” Sandro said. “He’s mature, and we need players that are already mature. I think Van Hecke is ready.”
Separately, Tottenham are also reported to be weighing up a move for Manchester City winger Savinho. The 22-year-old Brazilian was linked with a switch to Spurs last summer before Pep Guardiola persuaded him to stay at the Etihad. With Guardiola now having left City, and Savinho’s playing time having diminished over the past nine months, Spurs may find themselves in a stronger negotiating position than the £70 million they were quoted previously.
