Tottenham sign Marcos Senesi on a free as De Zerbi reshapes a leaky defence
Tottenham Hotspur have signed centre-back Marcos Senesi on a free transfer after his Bournemouth contract expired, with the Argentine joining Andy Robertson as Roberto De Zerbi rebuilds a side that conceded 122 Premier League goals over the past two seasons.
Tottenham Hotspur have signed centre-back Marcos Senesi on a free transfer, with the Argentine leaving Bournemouth after his contract expired at the close of the 2025-26 season to join Roberto De Zerbi’s defensive rebuild at Spurs.
Senesi made 128 appearances for the Cherries after joining from Feyenoord in 2022, but opted against signing a new deal on the south coast. His arrival follows left-back Andy Robertson’s free-transfer move to north London and addresses a glaring problem: Tottenham have conceded 122 goals across the last two Premier League seasons, finishing 17th in back-to-back campaigns.
“It’s a very special feeling to be a Tottenham Hotspur player,” Senesi said. “From the first moment, the club has shown why they want me and how much they want me to be a part of what they are building. It’s exciting and something I can’t wait to be involved in.”
De Zerbi, who secured 11 points from seven matches to steer Spurs clear of relegation last season, had publicly called for significant defensive investment. The Italian manager was enthusiastic about what Senesi brings to his system.
“Marcos’ experience, quality on the ball, and competitive edge will strengthen us defensively, as well as giving us flexibility in formation,” De Zerbi said. “He’s comfortable playing in a possession-based team, reads the game very well and has the personality to thrive in a demanding environment. I also love his mentality and desire to keep improving.”
Also on Wednesday, veteran defender Ben Davies signed a new 12-month contract, extending his stay at the club into a 13th season. The Wales captain made only five appearances last season due to injury but was praised by De Zerbi for his leadership during the relegation battle. Davies, who has made 363 appearances for Spurs, was involved in preparations ahead of the final-day win over Everton that secured the club’s top-flight status.
Not everyone is staying, however. Midfielder Yves Bissouma will depart when his contract expires on 30 June.
