Tottenham sign Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi on a free as De Zerbi rebuilds
Tottenham have confirmed the free transfer of Argentine centre-back Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth, making him their second signing of the summer following the arrival of Andy Robertson from Liverpool.
Tottenham have confirmed the signing of Marcos Senesi on a free transfer, with the Argentine centre-back set to join the club when his Bournemouth contract expires at the end of June. The 29-year-old becomes Spurs’ second confirmed summer arrival, following the earlier signing of Andy Robertson from Liverpool.
Senesi spent four seasons at Bournemouth, making 128 appearances for the Cherries and playing a key role in the club’s qualification for European football under Andoni Iraola. He will wear the number five shirt at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“It’s a very special feeling to be a Tottenham Hotspur player,” Senesi said. “From the first moment, the Club has shown why they want me and how much they want me to be a part of what they are building. Every time I step on the pitch, I will do my best to make the fans proud and to take the Club back to the place it belongs.”
Sporting Director Johan Lange described the signing as a strong fit for the club’s playing identity. “Marcos is a defender who brings a combination of quality, intelligence and leadership to our squad. His experience at the highest level, his composure in possession and his desire to compete for every ball make him an excellent fit for the way we want to play.”
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who takes charge of a Tottenham side that narrowly avoided relegation last season, was equally enthusiastic. “Marcos’ experience, quality on the ball, and competitive edge will strengthen us defensively, as well as giving us flexibility in formation. He’s comfortable playing in a possession-based team, reads the game very well and has the personality to thrive in a demanding environment.”
The arrival of Senesi signals Tottenham’s intent to build a more defensively solid and technically capable squad under De Zerbi as the club looks to recover from one of its most turbulent Premier League campaigns in recent memory.
