Tottenham confirm Andy Robertson signing as Liverpool left-back joins on free transfer
Andy Robertson will officially become a Tottenham Hotspur player on 1 July 2026 after leaving Liverpool when his contract expires. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi praised the 32-year-old Scotland captain as a proven winner who will bring leadership and experience to Spurs.
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed an agreement to sign Andy Robertson on a free transfer, with the Scotland captain set to officially join the club on 1 July 2026 once his Liverpool contract expires.
Robertson, 32, had been linked with a January move to Spurs but chose to remain at Anfield for the remainder of the season. Tottenham’s survival in the Premier League on the final day of the campaign ultimately secured the deal for the 2026/27 season.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi welcomed the signing with clear enthusiasm. “Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” he said. “He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.”
Robertson, currently in the United States with Scotland preparing for the World Cup, recorded a message for supporters. “I cannot wait to play for you guys, meet you guys and play in the stadium for the first time in front of you,” he said. “I’m already looking forward to next season.”
Sporting director Johan Lange described Robertson as “one of the best left-backs of all time in the Premier League” and said his professionalism would be invaluable to the squad’s development. “He shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club,” Lange added.
Robertson is the first of two defensive arrivals expected at Spurs this summer, with Marcos Senesi also set to join after leaving Bournemouth as a free agent. De Zerbi is understood to be pursuing a broader defensive rebuild, with a sizeable bid submitted for his former Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke.
The arrival of Croatian prospect Luka Vuskovic, who is due to return to the club, could put pressure on the existing centre-back pairing of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, with at least one of the two expected to depart. Van de Ven has been linked with a move to Liverpool.
