Tornado warning forces Kansas City Stadium evacuation ahead of Netherlands vs Tunisia
Fans at Kansas City Stadium were ordered to seek shelter on Thursday after a tornado warning threatened to postpone Tunisia's clash with the Netherlands. The disruption follows France's group-stage match against Iraq being suspended for nearly two hours due to lightning in Philadelphia.
Fans at Kansas City Stadium were evacuated from their seats on Thursday after a tornado warning raised the prospect of postponing Tunisia’s World Cup group-stage match against the Netherlands. Stadium announcements instructed supporters to move indoors and seek shelter in concourses, following guidance from staff on the ground.
Weather forecasts earlier in the day had warned that storms in Kansas City could bring damaging winds, hail, heavy downpours, and isolated tornadoes. Those conditions arrived within hours, with heavy rain sweeping the area and video circulating on social media showing the Arrowhead Stadium — which neighbours the match venue — entirely empty, its red seats drenched and deserted.
FIFA confirmed that the Tunisia versus Netherlands fixture would proceed as scheduled once the worst of the weather passed, avoiding a second major weather-related disruption at the tournament in the space of days.
The Kansas City scare came just days after France’s final group-stage match against Iraq in Philadelphia was suspended at half-time for almost two hours on Monday evening. Lightning detected within eight miles of Lincoln Financial Field triggered a mandatory halt under local regulations, with the game paused until conditions were deemed safe.
France had taken the lead 14 minutes in through Kylian Mbappé before the storms closed in. When play eventually resumed in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Les Bleus extended their advantage, with Mbappé adding a second goal 54 minutes into the match and Ousmane Dembélé completing a 3-0 victory shortly after.
