Ilia Topuria has publicly signalled his intention to return to the UFC octagon, months after suffering the first defeat of his professional career. The former featherweight and lightweight champion shared photos from the Didgori Battle Memorial in Georgia on Instagram, writing: “I returned to where it all began. Not to reminisce, but to remember. The Matador is coming back.”

Topuria (17-1) last competed on June 14 at UFC Freedom 250, where Justin Gaethje claimed the lightweight championship by technical knockout after Topuria’s corner intervened between the fourth and fifth rounds. It was the first time in 18 professional bouts that “El Matador” had been stopped.

In September, Topuria announced he had received medical clearance to resume full training and was back in the gym by the end of that month. Reports suggest a potential return to competition in early 2027, though no opponent or official date has been confirmed by the UFC.

The comeback tease carries added weight given the circumstances of the loss. Topuria had entered the Gaethje fight as a two-weight world champion, having previously captured the featherweight title and moved up to claim the lightweight belt. A corner stoppage, rather than a referee intervention or submission, added a layer of debate around the defeat that has followed Topuria through his recovery period.

With no formal announcement yet, the timeline and opponent for his return remain open questions — but the message from Georgia suggests Topuria is done reflecting and ready to compete again.
