Referee Dan Miragliotta is facing fierce criticism after standing up Renato Moicano during a back-control position with a body triangle at UFC Vegas 123, a decision that preceded Tom Nolan’s third-round stoppage of the Brazilian — the biggest win of Nolan’s career.

Moicano had been controlling the fight from one of MMA’s most dominant positions when Miragliotta intervened and reset the bout to the feet. Moments later, Nolan nearly finished Moicano before ultimately sealing the stoppage in the third round, ending a contest the Brazilian had been dominating.

Retired UFC welterweight Matt Brown was unsparing in his assessment of the call, delivering an extended rebuke on his podcast The Fighter vs. The Writer.

“This fcking standup,” Brown said. “What are these motherfckers doing? What the f*ck are we doing? The referee is supposed to stay out of the fight.”

Brown also raised broader questions about whether external pressure influences officiating decisions, noting a perceived trend toward more stand-and-trade action in the UFC. “I don’t like standups in general. I don’t like them at all as a rule. It’s mixed martial arts, it’s not kickboxing, it’s not Muay Thai. We know there’s a little bit of a push from the UFC to be more exciting, to be on the feet more — we have to question if there’s some influence there to the commissions, but the commissions should be completely neutral.”

Beyond the sporting outcome, Brown argued the call carried real financial and career consequences for Moicano, and that Miragliotta should face accountability for it.

“What we forget, that fight is Moicano’s f*cking life,” Brown said. “He affected his life. He affected the amount of money he got today. He affected the amount of money he’s going to get in his next fight. He affected his ranking. His ability to work towards whether it’s a title run or a bigger fight. He affected his sponsorship. That’s literally his entire life he’s affecting with an absolutely foolish call.”

Brown stopped short of calling for Miragliotta to lose his position but was clear that the referee should not escape without consequence. “Dan Miragliotta f*cked up big time. Should be reprimanded. It should never happen again. He should suffer at minimum those same consequences.”

While standup calls remain at a referee’s discretion under MMA rules, Miragliotta’s decision has drawn widespread criticism given the clarity of Moicano’s positional dominance at the time of the intervention.
