Toppmöller leaves Lens after his assistant's dismissal, according to Bild

Arriving at RC Lens this summer, Dino Toppmöller reportedly resigned after the club removed his assistant Nelson Morgado, deemed too demanding with the French staff. Yannick Cahuzac is expected to take interim charge from Friday at Monaco.

Dino Toppmöller is no longer RC Lens’s head coach after just four Ligue 1 matches. According to German newspaper Bild, it was the coach himself who ended the Lens adventure, not the northern club’s management.

The reason is directly linked to the fate of his assistant, Nelson Morgado. He was reportedly suspended on Monday after upsetting several French members of the technical staff by demanding greater commitment and passion from them. Upon learning of the decision, Toppmöller reportedly felt that management had overstepped into a domain that fell solely under his authority — the composition and management of his staff. Discussions between the two parties led to only one outcome: separation.

The coach’s departure would therefore have no connection to sporting results, which remained globally encouraging despite two defeats and a draw in recent league matches. Under his leadership, Lens had won the Trophée des champions against PSG (1-0) and won away at Slavia Prague in the Ligue des Champions (2-3).

The Artois club must now find a successor urgently. According to L’Équipe, Yannick Cahuzac should be appointed, at least on a provisional basis, and will take the bench Friday evening for the trip to Monaco.
