15-year-old JJ Gabriel stuns Man Utd by demanding immediate release after hat-trick

Manchester United are locked in a standoff with 15-year-old academy prodigy JJ Gabriel after the teenager submitted a formal request to leave the club and refused to take part in Tuesday’s training session under Michael Carrick.

United officials say they have been given no explanation for the decision and are standing firm on the regulations. A club source told the Manchester Evening News that Gabriel cannot be de-registered under his existing contract, which runs until the end of the season. Premier League rules state that United are entitled to challenge or reject any request to cancel his registration, and that a cancellation requires the agreement of all three parties — the club, the player, and his parent or guardian.

Gabriel has requested immediate free-agent status. The move came shortly after he scored a hat-trick in the UEFA Youth League and was accompanied by the removal of all Manchester United references from his social media accounts. Those close to the situation point to growing frustration over his pathway to the first team, with the teenager having been left off United’s main 25-man Champions League squad list.

The timing adds a further layer of complexity. Premier League regulations prohibit clubs from signing players to scholarship agreements before they turn 16 or professional contracts before they turn 17, meaning Gabriel — who turns 16 on 6 October — cannot be formally bound to any new club on either basis until that date.

Manchester City made a significant attempt to recruit Gabriel in 2025, with sporting director Hugo Viana leading a pitch that pointed to the club’s academy-to-first-team track record through players such as Phil Foden and Nico O’Reilly. Gabriel chose to remain at Old Trafford at that stage. City, along with Arsenal, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, are now reported to be monitoring the dispute closely.

Arsenal have highlighted their own record of fast-tracking young talent — including Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman — as evidence that teenagers can earn genuine first-team minutes at the Emirates. Chelsea are also said to be following the situation, though the club’s nine-month academy transfer ban, imposed in March, prevents them from signing any player previously registered with another Premier League or EFL academy. The ban does not apply to international recruits or players joining on professional terms.

United’s position remains unchanged: Gabriel is registered with the club and, without mutual agreement, that registration stands.
