Nicky Butt warns Michael Carrick could lose United job before January transfer window

Michael Carrick’s future as Manchester United manager is already under scrutiny, with former club midfielder Nicky Butt warning that the head coach could be dismissed before the January transfer window opens.

United have collected just four points from their opening four Premier League matches, suffering defeats to Hull City on the opening day and to Manchester City in the derby at the weekend. The 1-0 loss to City was Carrick’s second of the campaign and has intensified pressure on the manager heading into the early weeks of the season.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Butt argued that a fundamental disagreement between Carrick and the club’s recruitment structure over squad-building could prove costly. “It could be that Michael could not even get to the next transfer window,” Butt said. “He could be going, ‘Well, I’ve lost my job and you’re not giving me the tools to go and do my job with the back four’.”

United did strengthen their midfield during the summer, bringing in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba, though Baleba has yet to make his debut due to injury. However, Butt believes the defensive unit remains the squad’s most glaring weakness and that the club’s hierarchy has deferred addressing it.

“The right-backs, I don’t believe either of them are good enough,” Butt said. “You’re looking as a manager or as a coach, and you’re going, ‘well, I’m desperate to get some players in the back four’. But then it looks like the recruitment team and the powers that be at United are going, ‘no, that’s our next phase, and that might happen in January’.” He added that such a timeline “doesn’t help the coaches”.

Butt also raised concerns about the ageing of key defenders, noting that Harry Maguire, while an “unbelievable player”, is slowing with age, and that Luke Shaw’s persistent injury record makes him an unreliable asset despite his quality when fit. Lisandro Martinez, he acknowledged, remains at the top of his game.

On the attacking side, Butt was equally blunt, stating that United need “an out-and-out number nine” and that the club’s belief that the forward line is settled is, in his view, misplaced.

With the international break offering a brief pause, Carrick will be under pressure to arrest the slide when Premier League fixtures resume, having been left with limited defensive options after the summer window closed without a single new defender arriving.
