Rangers legend Nacho Novo's son dies as tributes pour in from football world

Former Rangers striker Nacho Novo has announced the death of his son, describing himself as ‘absolutely broken’ in a heartfelt Instagram post that drew an outpouring of tributes from across the football world.

The 47-year-old, who currently manages Scottish club Darvel FC, shared the news alongside pictures with his stepson Ross. ‘Nothing in my life could’ve prepared me for this post,’ Novo wrote. ‘We are absolutely broken to share the sad news that our beautiful boy has tragically passed away. Please respect our families privacy during this extremely difficult time. Forever in our hearts my boy.’

Rangers FC were among the first to respond, commenting: ‘The thoughts of everyone at Rangers are with you at this sad time Nacho.’ Sports broadcaster Laura Woods wrote: ‘I’m so sorry for your loss Nacho, rest in peace your beautiful boy.’ Wrestling personality Grado added: ‘So sorry to hear this Nacho — absolutely heart breaking. My thoughts are with you and your family.’

Glasgow Rangers supporters’ page Rangers Til’ I Die shared a message of solidarity on Facebook: ‘Our thoughts are with Nacho Novo and his family following the heartbreaking news of the passing of his son. During this incredibly difficult time, the entire Rangers family stands behind you and your loved ones.’ Former footballer Nazmi Albadawi also offered his condolences, writing: ‘Sorry for your loss brother.’

Novo’s bond with his son had been a source of strength during some of the darkest moments of his life. In 2018, he suffered a heart attack during a legends match in Berlin and was rushed into emergency surgery, calling his then seven-year-old son from the operating theatre. He suffered a stroke just weeks later, leaving him temporarily paralysed and unable to speak. He later described his son as ‘my rock, my everything.’

The Spanish striker made 179 appearances for Rangers, scoring 47 goals, and is perhaps best remembered for his Scottish Cup final winner against Dundee United in 2008. He was appointed manager of Darvel FC in November of last year, having previously coached at West of Scotland Premier side Drumchapel.
