Gabriel refuses to train as 15-year-old's Man United future reaches point of no return

JJ Gabriel has formally notified Manchester United of his desire to leave the club and refused to train with the first team this week, effectively ruling himself out of a potential debut against Brighton on Wednesday — a game that would have made him the youngest player ever to represent the club at 15 years old.

United sources say they are bemused by what has prompted Gabriel’s decision. The teenager scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah on Thursday, then promptly deleted a series of posts on Instagram and removed all mention of United from his social media channels — a sequence of events that offers a fairly clear signal of his intentions.

Hours after that Youth League fixture at Leigh Sports Village, manager Michael Carrick handed Champions League debuts to 19-year-olds Harry Amass and Shea Lacey, with fellow 19-year-old Tyler Fletcher named on the bench. Gabriel was ineligible for that fixture: he was not included on United’s ‘A’ list when the squad was submitted to UEFA, and at under-16 he could not be added to the ‘B’ list either.

He would have been eligible for the B list by the time United travel to face Atlético Madrid next month, and a Champions League appearance had always been considered more realistic once the club secured progression from the group stage. That timeline, it now appears, was not enough.

Gabriel’s father, Joe O’Cearuill, a former Republic of Ireland international, is widely regarded as a major influence on his son’s career. Industry sources describe him as difficult to deal with, though he has previously denied approaching other clubs. He has been a vocal advocate for his son on social media, regularly posting goal footage and clips from closed-doors sessions.

This is not the first time Gabriel has come close to leaving Old Trafford. Barely a year ago he was on the verge of joining Manchester City, and he has since accepted invitations to visit Barcelona, where he met first-team players at the Nou Camp. United’s director of football Jason Wilcox intervened in 2025 to keep him at the club, and Gabriel has since trained regularly with the first team, met head coach Ruben Amorim, and received consistent backing from Carrick.

Despite those efforts, Gabriel now appears ready to walk away rather than accept a Carabao Cup debut as his introduction to senior football. United insist they believe the situation can still be resolved, but the direction of travel suggests otherwise.
