Tonali open to Spurs move as Tottenham weigh swap deal worth up to £100m

Tottenham Hotspur have had an £80m bid for Newcastle's Sandro Tonali rejected and are now exploring a player-plus-cash swap, with Guglielmo Vicario, Lucas Bergvall, and Richarlison among those who could be offered to bridge the gap to Newcastle's £100m valuation.

Sandro Tonali has signalled his openness to leaving Newcastle United this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur preparing a potential player-plus-cash approach after an initial £80 million offer was rejected by the Magpies, who are holding out for closer to £100 million.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side have moved quickly in the transfer window, already bringing in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke. Tonali, 26, would represent the most ambitious addition yet — though Spurs are reportedly competing with Manchester City, Manchester United, and Arsenal for the Italian midfielder’s signature.

With the gap between Tottenham’s offer and Newcastle’s valuation standing at roughly £20 million, Spurs are said to be considering whether to include players in any deal. Three names have emerged as potential makeweights.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has been linked with a departure from north London, with a return to Italy previously mooted. Newcastle could have a use for the 29-year-old Italy international, particularly with Nick Pope’s future at St James’ Park reported to be in doubt. Vicario made 31 Premier League appearances last season before an injury late in the campaign handed Antonin Kinsky an extended run in the side.

Lucas Bergvall is another name in the frame. The 20-year-old Swedish midfielder has reportedly told Tottenham he wants to leave after limited game time under De Zerbi. Newcastle, who have relied on a strong central midfield unit for several seasons, could see Bergvall as a long-term successor to Tonali — and one who might generate a significant sell-on fee in years to come.

Strike Richarlison also features in discussions, though the source article was truncated before full details of his potential involvement were provided. The Brazilian forward has endured an injury-disrupted spell at Spurs and a move could suit both clubs if it helps unlock the Tonali deal.

Newcastle have already added French goalkeeper prospect Ewen Jaouen this summer but are thought to still be open to further business. Whether Spurs can construct a package that satisfies Eddie Howe’s club — in cash, players, or a combination of both — will likely define one of the summer’s most closely watched transfer negotiations.
